For the past 5 years he has spent at least two weeks a year with a volunteer at the Cody Museum of Firearms research room. This is a post that he has made and I hope you find it as informative as I have. As many of you will undoubtedly note, the figures I have compiled below vary significantly from the numbers published by George Madis in his tomes “The Winchester Book” and “The Winchester Handbook”. All of my statistical numbers were derived from a detailed survey conducted by the Cody Firearms Museum of the first , serial number records, and from the Polishing Room Serialization Record Books held by the Cody Firearms Museum. Undoubtedly, all of the caliber, and the Rifle versus Carbine production number ratios would change drastically if the records were available for serial numbers , – 2, , The Polishing Room Serialization Record Books PRSRBs which contain nothing more than just the serial number, fortunately survive up to serial number 1, , , which was manufactured on December 29th, Production ratios for the first , Model s made: Winchester began producing Model 94s at an accelerated pace starting in By the end of the year , Madis’ published DOM list and the PRSRB records only differ by just 17 serial numbers versus , but they rapidly begin to diverge in the ensuing years. The PRSRB records end at serial number 1, , , which is listed as the last Model 94 serial number recorded on December 29th of

The date code during these years was just placed on the box. Now, this doesn’t help much in many circumstances, because how likely is it that the box will still be around for as long as the gun exists. A gun made of steel and wood can stand the test of time. A paper box will likely not. Most people will have disposed of the box a long time ago, and so it’s unfortunate that the serial numbers were not stamped on the barrel during those 3 years.
Thankfully, after , Remington went back to having the serial numbers stamped on the barrel again. One thing that you might notice when you examine the chart above, the letters for the year code repeat themselves. This means that sometimes you will have to consider the specific model of Remington firearm that you have. For instance, if you have a Remington rifle that you know was made a long time ago, then you won’t expect the year date code to be from recent times.
Some models of Remington guns were only produced during a certain time period. Knowing that can also help you to better decipher the date codes from your Remington firearms serial numbers.

The forged steel receiver body of the Model 24 is rounded. But, unlike more sophisticated round action guns, such as the Ruger Gold Label see our Gold Label review on the Product Review Page that tend to be exceptionally trim, the Model 24 is very broad across the action body. The barrel breeches of most double guns are considerably wider than and overhang the sides of the receiver, but the receiver of the Model 24 is actually slightly wider than, and encloses the lower half of, the barrels.

The firing pins are 2 piece, with the front being spring loaded with the rear being just a striker against the front FP. The firing pin strikers are pinned into the frame crosswise and separately. These Vee type mainsprings are made in a RH and a LH version with a tab protruding down on the inside front tail that rides in a slot in the lower tang that retains the spring from popping outward.
